The Data Integration Arms Race - Matillion's $150 Million Vs. Fivetran's $565 Million
And Why Low-Code Is Attracting Billions Of Dollars In Funding
Well, it’s time to move over Fivetran. Goodbye Stitch. See ya later Astromoner.io
Another low-code data ingestion tool is pushing its way forward with its fresh new $150 million in funding. Lead by the fund General Atlantic with Battery Ventures and Sapphire Ventures(to name a few) following close behind, Matillion is gearing up for a tight battle against other large data ingestion contenders. Matillion is positioned well with customers like Western Union, FOX, Sony, Slack, Peet’s Coffee, and Cisco. To add to that their products are being used to support everything from business intelligence to machine learning.
For those not paying attention to this space, we have already written and/or made videos about several other similar solutions such as Fivetran and Rivery. As well as AWS’s Managed Workflows for Apache Airflow which we referenced in our article last week. Truthfully, we have barely even scratched the surface in terms of data ingestion tooling.
The fight over the data ingestion layer in the modern data stack has been going on for years. However, it feels like it is coming to a head. At this point, how much more money can go into these companies?
How many more tools can data engineers and analysts pick up?
I imagine in the future there will only be a few winners, and the rest, like Chart.io, will be purchased and dismantled.
But, let’s switch over to why companies are looking at products like Matillion.
First, let’s look at a quick review about Matillion.
Matillion is great for handling bulk and 'delta' loads to your warehouse, i.e. updating the warehouse with only those records updated since the last execution of the pipeline. The components and Python scripting provide a huge amount of flexibility in what the pipeline does, but you do need to have the expertise to know how to implement it properly.
Matillion has been less good at extracting data from APIs. The functionality was found to be complex and it was unclear how to manage things like pagination and rate limiting in API calls.
Wait…Breaking News!
I had to update my update about Matillion and they are about to be overshadowed.
While I was writing this content, Fivetran just announced that they have raised 565 million dollars and purchased HVR (a company focused on data integration, CDC, and on-premise services).
Fivetran and its investors are not messing around when it comes to data integration.
They are aiming to be one of the winners at the end of this gauntlet of low-code data solutions. They have purchased another data integrations tool and are trying to get into the enterprise game. They see the money and they have a strategy to get it.
